John Cena has opened up about his role in the “surreal” Barbie movie directed by Greta Gerwig.
During his appearance on The Today Show to discuss, among other topics, Fast X, Cena revealed how he got involved in Barbie.
Landing the role as a merman, Cena explained how Margot Robbie got him the part, saying:
“It was a happy accident. I haven’t worked with Margot before. We literally randomly ran into each other as friends. Fast X was filming across the street from Barbie.”
It would turn out that Robbie, who plays Barbie in the movie, was behind “a lot of the casting decisions”, with Cena revealing:
“And [she asked], ‘Why don’t you do “Barbie”?’ I said, ‘I’ve been trying!’ And Margot makes a lot of the decisions for that and I said, ‘Well, I’ll do whatever you need.’”
Speaking about the making of the movie, which is set for release on July 21 2023, Cena stated:
“I think it’s going to take a lot of people by surprise. [It’s] a very interesting take on everything but I was super lucky and it’s tremendously surreal.”
The star-studded movie certainly isn’t a ‘traditional’ take on Barbie, as can be seen from the trailer below this news story.
