A former WWE Women’s Tag Team Champion has shared their thoughts on being frustrated by the company’s creative.
Kayden Carter was one of a number of WWE stars to part ways with the company in May of this year, being released alongside her tag team partner, Katana Chance, among others.
Now a free agent, as of August 1, Carter has re-emerged as Lacey Lane and recently shared her thoughts on the WWE creative process during an appearance on Busted Open Radio.
Having been trained by host Bully Ray, he would note that he felt that some of her “spark” had been lost when she got to WWE, with Lane explaining:
“I feel like I have so much to offer, and I feel like I wasn’t able to showcase that.
“I feel like people are used to seeing me in a tag team… but I also want to remind people that I am an individual, that I did have a spark before I got to WWE.
“I was so much of a Spitfire, and that same passion, that same drive, is still there.”
Having been NXT Women’s Tag Team Champion with Katana Chance, the pair would continue to team on the main roster, including debuting against Ronda Rousey & Shayna Baszler on WWE Raw in June 2023.
Despite coming out of the gates strong on the main roster, Lane felt a lack of momentum when it comes to women’s tag team wrestling in WWE, stating:
“I’m not quite sure why it’s such a taboo thing where everyone’s like, ‘oh, like, women’s tag wrestling isn’t anything,’ and I’m like, ‘it’s fun’.”
Lane would go on to speculate that not being ‘hand-chosen’ was a reason behind the perceived ceiling on her potential, explaining:
“If you’re not the hand-chosen, it doesn’t matter what you do.”
She would reveal that she sent an email to “Road Dogg” Brian James, asking for a PLE opportunity, only to receive a message that “timing’s everything”.
With her pitch being dismissed, Lane would also take issues with the positive feedback she received, noting it didn’t help her develop, revealing:
“Every time after a match, we got great critiques. TJ (Wilson) was always like, ‘that was awesome. Like, you guys brought unique stuff all the time.’
“We never got anything said to us that, like, ‘Hey, you should do this, you should do that.’ We just tried to give more because we didn’t know what we were lacking.”
A breaking point would occur after their match on WWE SmackDown in London, which saw Chance & Carter lose to The Secret Hervice (Alba Fyre & Piper Niven), with Lane explaining:
“We literally broke down after this match because we felt like we were set up in such a bad position… and it’s like they couldn’t tell us, like, what was wrong.
“We had no clue. And we just were so upset in London. And it was, it was horrible.”
In the interview, Lane would reveal that she would be interested in signing with AEW, citing their strong women’s roster as a reason.
