After his title loss at WWE SummerSlam, Damian Priest commented being pushed by Triple H despite not being “a main guy”.
Amid conversation about what is next for him now that he is a babyface, Damian Priest also commented on the locker room’s reaction to the fact that the World Heavyweight Championship match at SummerSlam was contested by himself and GUNTHER – two names who weren’t bona fide main event stars before Paul Levesque (Triple H) took over WWE creative.
In an interview with Sports Illustrated, Damian Priest reflected on losing his championship to GUNTHER at SummerSlam this past Saturday.
Noting that neither are in the class of very top main event stars in the company, yet Triple H gave them the World Heavyweight Championship match at SummerSlam, Priest said:
“Forget for a moment about everything Gunther has said to me and what I’ve said to him. We’re not part of that class of the main guys.
“We’re seen as strong characters on TV, but we’re not Seth Rollins, we’re not CM Punk, we’re not Drew McIntyre or Roman Reigns. We’re not the regularly scheduled programmed guys. AJ Styles, Randy Orton, Finn Balor, we’re none of those guys.
“The fact it was Gunther and me in this high-profile World Title match, that’s big. There were so many boys and girls in the locker room who were like, ‘One of us made it’. That was my favorite part, hearing my peers talk about what it meant to them.”
Triple H himself has spoken very highly of Priest and his title reign on multiple occasions, shooting down opinions that he didn’t live up to the level of being a top world champion.
Tonight’s August 5 episode of WWE Raw will feature the fallout of the break-up of Judgment Day at SummerSlam, with Dominik Mysterio turning on Rhea Ripley, and Finn Balor turning on Priest to cost him the title.
