There is reportedly a directive in WWE to start hiring “shorter referees”, according to the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

This is being done as “another way to make talent look taller”.

It’s well known that WWE already goes to measures to do that, whether that be manipulating camera angles and the angles/perspectives people on-screen are stood at, or making interviewers stand with their feet unnaturally wide apart below the camera.

With the directions of hiring bigger developmental talent and giving them more of a push on NXT 2.0 TV instead of just good workers, it seems WWE believes this is the way to make some ‘larger than life’ stars – to literally make them look larger than they already are.

Will that work? In today’s day and age, combat sports have proven size is less important than it used to be, but people still loved Fury vs Wilder which was two heavyweights going at it, so only time will tell.

The verdict would seem to be that legitimate heavyweights/giants do have a place, and yes they can be stars, but size is not the be-all-and-end-all when it comes to getting over.
