There is interest in a return to a major international destination among “numerous people of influence” in WWE.
Having not visited China since 2019, it appears that WWE may be discussing a return to the region in the future.
WWE has only had eight shows in China, with seven of those taking place from 2010 onwards and the last occuring in 2019.
With past visits falling under the WWE Live and house show banner, it appears that there is interest in the company returning to China, but this time for a “major event”.
Fightful Select reports that plans for a PLE in China have been “discussed internally” within WWE, although the final form of the return is yet to be revealed.
Specifically, a potential destination of Hong Kong has been mentioned.
Previous events have broadly taken place in Shanghai, with a 1994 WWF House Show in Hong Kong and a 2017 WWE Live show in Shenzen.
A PLE in China would be the first time the region has been the home of a major WWE event and would mark the company’s first return since September 2019.
WWE regularly visited China, typically in August or September, between 2010 and 2019, missing 2011, 2014 and 2015 during that timespan.
As Fightful Select notes, the regular visits were halted by the COVID pandemic of 2020.
WWE currently has Wendy Choo in NXT/Evolve who is of Chinese descent, but no other Chinese talents on the roster, with the likes of Boa, Ru Feng and Erica Yan all departing developmental over the past few years.
