According to sources, WWE officials are reportedly considering a heel turn for Asuka. Wrestling Observer Radio noted that there has been talk in the company of turning the longest reign NXT women’s champion heel, perhaps even before WWE Evolution.
Since her shocking loss at WrestleMania 34, Asuka has struggled to find her groove on the main roster. While she did get to feud with Carmella in the early summer for the Smackdown Women’s title, Asuka actually came out looking worse from the feud due to creative trying to “protect” her, not realizing that they were doing more harm than good by making her seem incompetent in the climax of her matches with Carmella at Extreme Rules and Money In The Bank.
A change in character is definitely needed for the “Empress of Tomorrow” and a heel turn can do wonders to revitalize the magic she had in NXT.
Back in NXT during her historic 510 reign as champion, Asuka showed promise as the cocky, dominant champion in the latter half of her championship run. If creative can truly commit to Asuka’s heel turn (should it happen) then Smackdown will have another strong heel on their roster, coming fresh off of Becky’s turn at Summerslam.
