Despite a reputable source suggesting otherwise, Mercedes Mone wasn’t announced for AEW, but details of her WWE contract remain.
In his original Tweet, Steven Muehlhausen of DAZN claimed that:
“Sources: Mercedes Varnado will be Saraya’s partner next week in #AEWDynamite in LA against Britt Baker and Jamie Hayter.”
Whilst this did seem like a credible rumor from a credible source, AEW had kept tight-lipped about who would team with Saraya against Britt Baker and Jamie Hayter until it was revealed to be Toni Storm
This, of course, doesn’t mean that Mone won’t appear in some capacity on the show in a similar way to how it was heavily rumored that Matt Hardy would be the Exalted One only for it to be revealed as Brodie Lee, with Hardy still debuting on the same show in another capacity.
With 2023 getting off to something of a strong start for Mercedes Mone (Mercedes Varnado, formerly Sasha Banks in WWE) it does appear that official confirmation of her arrival in New Japan and, potentially, AEW have had to be kept quiet due to her WWE contract.
Muehlhausen also revealed that they:
“Couldn’t announce or make a major hint due to her being still under contract to WWE until the beginning of 2023.”
Before she arrived in New Japan for Wrestle Kingdom 17, the closest we had to any confirmation was the Bushiroad CEO Takaaki Kidani saying there “is a possibility”.
Mone would debut in New Japan at the Tokyo Dome show and confront IWGP Women’s Champion KAIRI.
She would challenge KAIRI to a match at NJPW Battle in the Valley on February 18 in San Jose, California.
