The show opened with Roman Reigns. Unhappy that Jinder Mahal cost him his match last week, the ‘Big Dog’ called out the ‘Modern-Day Maharaja’ but General Manager Kurt Angle appeared instead.
He announced that Mahal would be added to the night’s triple threat qualifier match after receiving word from management that it was “best for business.”
The night’s first of three qualifier matches saw Bobby Roode defeated No Way Jose and last year’s briefcase winner, Baron Corbin. Alexa Bliss then overcame Mickie James and Bayley to be added to the Women’s MITB ladder match.
Unhappy with Kurt’s decision at the open of the show, Roman decided to take his frustration out on Mahal. After a beatdown backstage and across the ramp, Kurt gave Roman the rest of the night off and kicked him out of the arena.
Later on in the night, Mahal was seen getting checked over by medical staff when he agreed to continue with his match. Only to be ambushed again by a returning Reigns. Spearing the former WWE Champion through a wall and costing him his spot in the MITB qualifier.
With Mahal out of the main event, Kurt had to find a last-minute replacement and after a phone call from Stephine McMahon, this came in the form of Kevin Owens. ‘KO’ went on to defeat Bobby Lashley and Elias to become the sixth addition to the match.
