WWE Reveals Name Of Unified Title Ahead Of NXT New Year’s Evil

WWE has revealed the name for the NXT championship set to be awarded to the winner of the title unification match at New Year’s Evil.

During the January 4 NXT special, North American Champion Carmelo Hayes will do battle with Cruiserweight Champion Roderick Strong. It had previously been noted that the winner will earn the North American Title, with the Cruiserweight Title’s lineage to end.

WWE has now revealed that the winner of the title unification bout will receive a new championship. As per the official WWE.com match preview, Hayes and Strong will fight to become the first NXT North American Cruiserweight Champion.

The preview reads:

Who is the premier champion of NXT, North American Champion Carmelo Hayes or Cruiserweight Champion Roderick Strong?

Each Superstar has been claiming that his Championship is the top title in NXT and the time has come for these Superstars to put their money where their mouths are, by going title for title at New Year’s Evil.

Since cashing in his NXT Breakout Tournament contract to swipe the North American Title, Hayes has been on a mission to elevate the title to the “A Championship” of NXT. Meanwhile, Strong has been on the hunt for “Big Money Fights” suspending the stipulations for the Cruiserweight Title to take on all competitors, including Odyssey Jones and Joe Gacy.

With both Superstars declaring their superiority over NXT 2.0, it was only a matter of time before their paths crossed resulting in a ringside melee.

Strong has been Cruiserweight Champion since defeating KUSHIDA for the gold in September. Strong most recently defended the title at NXT WarGames against Joe Gacy.

Hayes won the North American Championship in October, cashing in the title shot he earned winning the NXT Breakout Tournament. He notably defeated Johnny Gargano and Pete Dunne in a three-way to retain the title in November.
