An update has emerged on WWE’s apparent trials of a new concept during Friday’s (December 15) SmackDown taping.
Ahead of the live episode, two matches took place, with some interesting branding surrounding the ring.
Matches featuring wrestlers from other brands and the free agent pool took place with ‘WWE Speed’ logos on the ring, and five minute timers counting down during the bout.
While it was unclear whether this branding was for a new show, or just to add a new element to dark matches, more details have emerged on these matches per Fightful Select,
According to Fightful, these matches were filmed as if they’d be broadcasted. Corey Graves and Kevin Patrick were also reportedly on commentary.
While Fightful hasn’t heard of any specific plans, it was noted that NXT talent working pre-show matches was previously reserved for Main Event, which is taped ahead of Raw.
This would indicate that WWE Speed could be a secondary taped show similar to WWE Main Event, however this hasn’t been confirmed.
During these WWE Speed tapings, NXT star Nathan Frazer faced off against Raw star Bronson Reed.
NXT’s Axiom also went one-on-one with Cedric Alexander, who’s currently billed as a WWE free agent.

We will continue to provide updates on WWE Speed as they become available.
