A number of NXT stars saw their main roster call-ups on WWE Raw, with Robert Stone sharing his thoughts on the moves.
The Raw after WrestleMania 42 saw a number of brand switches coming out of the WWE Premium Live Event, with Sol Ruca, Joe Hendry and Ethan Page all getting called up from NXT.
With Ruca and Page both in action, it was announced that Joe Hendry will appear on next week’s show.
Addressing the stars that he has now lost, NXT general manager Robert Stone called them “amazing talents” in a post on Twitter, sharing:
“No doubt @joehendry, @OfficialEGO and @SolRucaWWE are all amazing talents. Happy to see them on #WWERaw TONIGHT!!
“Who is gonna step up on @WWENXT tomorrow????”
Zaria – who also appeared on Raw to cost Sol Ruca her match against Liv Morgan – would be referenced in a separate post, indicating that there’s more to be discussed about her appearance on Raw, with Stone tweeting:
“THIS WILL BE SETTLED TOMORROW on #NXTRevenge Night 2!!!”
NXT Revenge Night 2 takes place on April 21, with Zaria and Sol Ruca set to face off for what is likely to be the final time on the Tuesday night show. They bow out in style, however, with a Last Woman Standing match stipulation between the former friends.
Ahead of his upcoming concert on next week’s WWE Raw, Joe Hendry will also be in action against Keanu Carver.
Move Up, Step Up
After WrestleMania 42, main roster call-ups were inevitable as WWE seeks to grow the future top stars on Raw and SmackDown from the seeds planted in NXT.
With more opportunities than ever before to become a WWE star, pathways include the regular tryouts, the Next In Line (NIL) program targeting elite college athletes, and WWE ID, focused on developing independent talent.
The latter has seen a number of WWE ID talent appear on the Tubi-streamed incarnation of Evolve, as well as on NXT itself, with Vanity Project’s Jackson Drake, Brad Baylor & Ricky Smokes all part of that program, and the latter two, previously known as Swipe Right, as NXT Tag Team Champions.
Not everyone coming through NXT is bound for the main roster, although that would certainly be the pathway stars are hoped to be following. The turnover of talent sees WWE regularly re-evaluate its roster, with releases (requested and otherwise) and contract expiry an occasional occurrence.
A main roster call-up is no guarantee of success either, with the potential for stars to move back to NXT, as well as the possibility of a release. Giovanni Vinci was once such an individual to experience a circuitous path in his WWE career, recently speaking on the subject of his release.
Worrying about possibly being released isn’t an ideal way to approach one’s future, in the same way that employees shouldn’t fear being fired on a day-to-day basis. Finding success in your role is the more rewarding aspect, and the same is likely to be true for many stars. After all, it’s worth remembering that doors open both ways and “when one door closes, another opens.”
