It is now confirmed that WWE will be scrapping the NXT Cruiserweight Championship as of next week’s NXT New Year’s Evil show.
Cruiserweight Champion Roderick Strong will face North American Champion Carmelo Hayes in a ‘unification match’ where the winner will go forward as the North American Champion.
It seemed that WWE was going to change up the Cruiserweight Title at WarGames by putting it on Joe Gacy and rebranding it to something else, but the decision is instead to get rid of it all together and cut a title from the NXT brand.
In its current iteration starting with the Cruiserweight Classic in 2016, the lineage of the title has been as follows:
- TJ Perkins
- The Brian Kendrick
- Rich Swann
- Neville
- Akira Tozawa
- Enzo Amore
- Kalisto
- Enzo Amore
- Cedric Alexander
- Buddy Murphy
- Tony Nese
- Drew Gulak
- Lio Rush
- Angel Garza
- Jordan Devlin
- Santos Escobar
- Kushida
- Roderick Strong
