It’s the cross brand wildcard invitational twice a month bonanza. Everyone’s favourite WWE gimmick is in danger of making a return it seems.
While nothing is certain, Fightful Select reports WWE is planning on having more stars from opposing brands have dark matches before and after shows in the future.
If you’ve ever been to a WWE show, you’ll know they often tape dark matches, or matches for Main Event before and after Raw and SmackDown live tapings.
One of the reasons for this is to let the crowd go home happy if the main event was a heel-heavy segment. Another is to give perhaps less-utilised wrestlers the chance to have a match in front of a full crowd.
In the past, WWE has also used dark matches to give NXT stars try-outs, with both Tommaso Ciampa and Bron Breakker having try-out matches in recent months.
It doesn’t seem like we’re heading for an actual return of the wildcard rule, but don’t be surprised to see Raw stars showing up before or after SmackDown (and vice versa) if you go to a WWE show soon.
