This week on Smackdown Live, Roman Reigns’ mystery attacker was seemingly revealed. Buddy Murphy told Reigns that he saw Rowan at the scene of the assault, but stated that he did not know if Daniel Bryan was also involved.
Many people expected the Roman Reigns segments to lead to a match between “The Big Dog” and Daniel Bryan at the upcoming SummerSlam pay-per-view event. However, with just three nights until the show, it seems like that match won’t be taking place.
Instead of Reigns vs. Bryan, it was reported by the ever-reliable WrestleVotes yesterday that the idea of Reigns vs. Buddy Murphy was pitched backstage. However, it is not clear if that match will be happening either.
Dave Meltzer noted on the Wrestling Observer Radio that if neither match does take place, it is unlikely that WWE will leave Roman Reigns off the pay-per-view altogether.
Meltzer said it is quite possible that WWE will shoot an angle between Reigns and most likely Daniel Bryan, Rowan and Buddy Murphy, with the truth about Roman’s attacker finally being revealed:
“I can’t imagine them having a Summerslam and not having Roman Reigns and Daniel Bryan on the show at all. So I mean they’re not gonna wrestle, but they may do the reveal or something like that on the show or something. Obviously, they’re gonna continue with the angle and it’s gonna lead to something you know, on the following pay-per-view, I guess. So that angle is going and they lost their timing on it and now it’s not ready for the pay-per-view.”
Meltzer reports that while Bryan vs. Reigns was once the plan for SummerSlam, Vince McMahon allegedly “lost track of time” and felt the storyline needed more time to run before the two former WWE Champions went one-on-one.
