Some more backstage news has now come to light following WWE releasing 18 of its wrestlers, including several NXT talents, yesterday.
A number of the names let go on November 4 were from NXT, and it sounds like the developmental releases won’t be stopping any time soon.
According to Bryan Alvarez of the Wrestling Observer, the idea is that WWE is set to assess everyone in developmental every six months, and if anyone hasn’t made enough progress, they’ll be released.
Alvarez said:
“I don’t know exactly what this entails but in general, the new idea is that they are going to be heavily evaluating everybody every six months from this point forward. I think the idea is we no longer want people to spend seven years in developmental. So it’s gonna be like every six months they are going to evaluate you and if you’re not getting better, you’re out of there.
“Everything has changed with this new NXT. They know what they want. It’s a certain type of person who works a certain way and talks a certain way and is trained from scratch and they get better quick and they move up or they’re out of there. This is the new way that it’s gonna work.”
Other other reasons that have been mentioned for talent being released yesterday include “budget cuts”, which was the reason given to them by WWE, and for some of them, their refusal to get vaccinated played into the decision too.
