UPDATE – Paul Levesque (Triple H) has responded to criticism of Roman Reigns beating Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 39 – find out what he said at this link.
A WWE rep has responded to claims that Vince McMahon booked the finish to Cody Rhodes vs Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 39.
In what came as a shock to the majority of fans, Reigns actually retained the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship over Rhodes after interference from Solo Sikoa.
The finish was met with much criticism, and of course the first thing that came into many people’s heads was to question whether Vince McMahon was involved.
McMahon was backstage at both nights of WrestleMania, reportedly in a “supervisory” role although Paul Levesque (Triple H) was said to be the one actually running the show.
Since McMahon’s return in January, WWE has denied him being in charge of creative with that role being headed up by Levesque, although Levesque has said that he and McMahon may discuss ideas, but Levesque is the one that makes the final decisions.
Fightful Select posted a report regarding the story behind the controversial finish including responses from a WWE rep and sources.
According to the report, all the people Fightful spoke to claimed McMahon “wasn’t involved in the decision making”.
The plan for Reigns to win was reportedly set “several weeks ago”.
Another interesting note was that “a lot of the interference elements” of the match weren’t relayed to “talent, refs and ringside staff” until the day of the show.
The Usos, Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn, Paul Heyman and Sikoa all interfered during the match, with Sikoa’s last Samoan Spike directly leading to the finish when Reigns speared Rhodes then pinned him.
Nick Khan recently said in an interview that WWE has creative planned for “months, months, months” beyond WrestleMania.
