Barbed Wire Stipulation Added To Former WWE Star’s Retirement Match

Barbed Wire Stipulation Added To Former WWE Star’s Retirement Match WWE

With a career dating back to 1985 and two runs in WWE, a hardcore legend will retire with a No Ropes Barbed Wire match.

Former two-time ECW World Heavyweight Champion Sabu will have his retirement match on GCW Joey Janela’s Spring Break 9 on April 18, during WWE WrestleMania 41 week.

Setting up the match between the pair, Janela spoke about his upcoming match during GCW The Philly Special on April 6 (in footage shared on Twitter), saying:

“That man resurrects only to be crucified again. I have given my life. I have given my blood. I have given my soul to those three letters – GCW.

“I’ve fallen through doors. I’ve gotten hit with chairs. I’ve gotten lit on fire. I’ve fallen and been punctured by thumbtacks. I have fell through panes of glass. I have been hit by fluorescent light tubes. I have been thrown off buildings for those three letters – GCW.

“And, I’ve tangled, and been tangled, in this. You know, I know, we all know what this is. This is real. This isn’t rubber. This is real, sharp, f**king barbed wire.”

Janela would show off the barbed wire to an appreciative crowd who had, only moments earlier, been warning him that Sabu would kill him.

“A lot of people know what this is, but not a lot of people know what this feels like. I know what this feels like. Sabu knows what this feels like.

“And, in twelve days, we’re gonna know what it feels like again, because, in twelve days, twelve days, whether I’m 80%, 50%, 30%, 10%, 33 1/3% chance, I will put on the performance of my career when we take these ropes down, when we take these f**king ropes down and we don’t replace them with chains or anything like that. We replace them with real, sharp, life-threatening barbed wire.

“I don’t care. You don’t care. We all don’t care whether I live or die because love me or hate me, we know what I’ve been through.”

In addition to being a two-time ECW World Heavyweight Champion, Sabu also held the World Television Championship and the FTW Heavyweight Championship.

He would also be a three-time ECW World Tag Team Champion, with Taz on one occasion and RVD on two.

His first appearance in WWE came in 1983 when the company was WWF, returning for a year-long contract in 2006.

Sabu made his retirement announcement in November 2021 and would appear on AEW Dynamite in May 2023.

He would be the special guest enforcer for Adam Cole (along with Roderick Strong) during the unsanctioned match against Chris Jericho at the 2023 AEW Double or Nothing.
