WWE Planning For Roman Reigns To Surpass Legendary Title Reign? WWE

While many thought that Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns’ last title defence against Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 39 would mark the end of his near 1000 day title reign, the Tribal Chief would walk out of Hollywood with the gold.

Despite the backlash to Reigns’ retention, WWE seems intent on pushing Reigns to make further history with the title.

Andrew Zarian of the Wrestling Observer would respond to Jim Valley’s tweet regarding Reigns potentially surpassing the 1,474 day title reign of Hulk Hogan, or at least getting to 1000 days.

Valley would state that WWE’s introduction of the new World Heavyweight Championship felt like a way to facilitate Reigns holding the title longer.

In which Zarian would respond:

I have been told numerous times that WWE wants to update its history books and needs longer title reigns.

Just to clear up any misconceptions that may have been going around, Zarian later tweeted:

Something I said on the air is being taken out of context. I never said Roman Reigns will surpass Hogan or Bruno’s title reign.

My point was that WWE would like to modernize the record books and Roman holding the title for over 1000 days is part of that plan.

With the recent introduction of a second world title, Reigns no longer has a complete monopoly over the WWE main event scene.

This seemingly opens the door for Reigns to proceed forward and break more historic records as Zarian suggests.

WWE’s penchant to break long-standing records has been seen on numerous occasions recently with The Usos and The New Day surpassing Demolition’s previously held record for the tag team titles.

As well as this, Gunther is now being anticipated to break the Honky Tonk Man’s 454 day reign, with his current reign approaching a year.

Gunther recently surpassed a huge Intercontinental Title milestone, which you can read more about right here.
