Former WWE Champion Injured During In-Ring Return WWE

A former WWE Champion has revealed that they suffered after misjudging a move to the floor at an independent wrestling show.

Rob Van Dam competed at MLW Battle Riot VII, appearing during the battle royal and making his way down to the final two.

With Matt Riddle defending his MLW World Heavyweight in the battle royal, the former WWE star was able to retain after shoving RVD to the floor for the elimination.

Opening up about the injury he suffered as a result of the fall during his 1 of a Kind Podcast, RVD revealed he had broken both of his heels, saying:

“A lot of people don’t know that I got hurt because it was the very last move in the night. But I went up to the top rope and Matt Riddle pushed me off and then I landed on my feet.

“Normally I kind of like, hug the guardrail and my weight goes into it. This one I must have misjudged it a little bit, and I just landed on my feet.

“Both heels blew. I thought that my ankles were sprained. I crawled out of there. I haven’t been able to walk since. And so I got the x-rays, both heels broke.

“It’s not something that I’m not used to, I kind of routinely kind of go through this thing, but, man, it definitely made me cancel a lot of plans that I had for the next few months and Wrestlecon and WrestleMania week, I made it through all the obligations.”

RVD has previously revealed that he doesn’t think he will ever officially retire as a professional wrestler.

The WWE Hall of Famer continues to work on the independent wrestling scene and has also made a number of appearances in AEW.

His last AEW appearance took place on the April 20, 2024, episode of Rampage with a victory over Isiah Kassidy, Komander and Lee Johnson in the High Flying 4/20 Elimination Four Way.
