WWE Says Goodbye to Burt Reynolds

The world lost one of its most notable actors last week when Burt Reynolds passed away at 82 years of age. Starring in classic films like Smokey and the Bandit, Deliverance, and Cannonball Run, Reynolds also enjoyed a cameo with WWE.

Burt Reynolds was a wrestling fan, taking part in the festivities of WrestleMania X as a special guest ring announcer. On that particular night, times were changing in WWE. If only momentarily, they would transition away from the body builder ideal of Lex Luger, and reaffirm their confidence in fan favorite Bret Hart, who went on to win the WWE Championship from Yokozuna. Reynolds introduced the combatants for this main event.

WWE released a statement via their website, remembering Burt Reynolds:

The star of more than 50 feature films, including “The Longest Yard,” “Smokey and the Bandit,” “The Cannonball Run” and “Boogie Nights” (for which he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor), Reynolds was a special celebrity guest at WrestleMania X, serving as ring announcer for the main event WWE Championship Match pitting Bret Hart against Yokozuna.

“I had the pleasure to see Burt recently,” Hart wrote on Twitter. “Although visibly frail, he remembered me. I thanked him for his part of Wrestlemania X. He was a real fan, thoroughly enjoyed the event, the wrestlers & fans. He was a class act and I’m honoured to have been able to tell him that. R.I.P.”

WWE extends its condolences to Reynolds’ family, friends and fans.

Aside from Bret Hart, tributes have also come in from Ric Flair, Hulk Hogan and some wrestling fans wondering why Burt hasn’t been inducted into the celebrity wing of the WWE Hall of Fame.

WrestleTalk would also like to offer our well-wishes to everybody affected by the passing of Burt Reynolds.
