On September 2, AEW and Tony Khan announced that CM Punk’s contracts with the company had been terminated with cause.
Punk’s firing came after the results of an internal investigation into the backstage incident at AEW All In at Wembley Stadium on August 27.
Following Punk’s firing, speculation emerged about a potential return to WWE, and there has now been an update regarding the possibility of that happening.
Per Nick Hausman of Haus of Wrestling, nobody that Hausman has spoken to with knowledge of the situation has ruled out the possibility of Punk returning.
One WWE source that spoke to Hausman noted that “the buzz internally about Punk as a potential free agent is not there like it was when Cody Rhodes was rumored to be on the market at the beginning of 2022”.
Another source noted that, while there could be interest in Punk returning, timing is everything, and at the moment, WWE’s product is hot and not necessarily in need of a big-name signing.
However, multiple sources made it clear that they saw WWE and Punk working together as a possibility if good business could be done, especially as the new merged TKO company looks to impress stockholders.
There is still currently no confirmation on whether CM Punk has a non-compete clause to adhere to, or how long that would be if he does, but he did recently say he’s “got some time on his hands for the next two months”.
