UPDATE: Find out who won the SmackDown semi-final and advanced to Night of Champions at this link.
Find out who advanced in the WWE World Heavyweight Championship tournament triple threat that kicked off tonight’s show.
Amid a flurry of discourse, the match many WWE fans were waiting for kicked off the night on SmackDown for a WWE World Heavyweight Championship tournament match.
With AJ Styles and Rey Mysterio making their entrances to the tournament match in an online exclusive through WWE’s social media, all eyes were certainly on Edge.
Edge got a television entrance including a moment of pause to stare longingly at the WWE World Heavyweight Championship belt which has become customary for the tournament.
In the final third of the match, Edge had Rey Mysterio in an Edgecator, but when it was broken up by Styles he earned himself one as well.
With a string of attempted finishers, it was AJ Styles landing a Phenomenal Forearm and picking up the pinfall victory over Edge.
So no, Edge did not advance in the WWE World Heavyweight Championship tournament, despite his recent emotional comments on social media that led many to believe that would be the case.
In tonight’s main event, Styles will face the winner of a second three-way tonight which is Sheamus vs Bobby Lashley vs Austin Theory.
The winner of that will then face Seth Rollins in the final of the tournament at Night of Champions.
You can check out the card for SmackDown below:
