WWE Star Opens Up About Severity Of Injury WWE

After nearly ten months on the shelf due to injury, Sonya Deville made her return to WWE Raw on May 20, 2024.

Deville’s return was in the form of a backstage segment with Shayna Baszler and Zoe Stark with her last match being in July 2023 where she teamed with Chelsea Green to take on Bianca Belair and Charlotte Flair.

Her injury would see Deville having to vacate the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship, with Piper Niven choosing to become the other half of the champions alongside Green.

On the recent episode of Insight with Chris Van Vliet, Deville opened up about her ACL injury she sustained during her last match and underestimating its severity as she completed it, saying:

“The whole time I’m like ‘Oh my God, I hope I don’t fall flat on my face.’

“Sure enough, we made it to the end, I limped back and I got in my rental car, went to my hotel and tried to pretend it didn’t happen. Because in this business nobody wants to be injured and out of play.”

Initially convincing herself that it wasn’t anything major, Deville revealed the moment her belief changed, going on to state:

“I told myself it’s fine, it’s a sprain, I’ll just wrap it.

“Long story short, [I] woke up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom and I fell face-first into the wall. And I was like ‘Oh I think something’s wrong.'”

With no way to work through the injury, Deville also shared her feelings at having to drop WWE gold, saying:

“I was so devastated. I had been with the company for nine years and of course, part of being in the WWE is to one day grab that brass ring and get gold around your waist. And that’s what I had been striving for of course.

“So I finally got that first championship and I was so happy. I was so elated, I was ready to make those titles mean more than ever before and then the injury came.”

Bianca Belair & Jade Cargill are the current WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions having defeated The Kabuki Warriors (Asuka & Kairi Sane) at WWE Backlash on May 4, 2024.

Deville is assigned to WWE Raw with Chelsea Green (and Piper Niven) having been drafted to SmackDown in the 2024 WWE Draft.
