On last night’s edition of SmackDown Live, General Manager Paige was in the ring to announce AJ Styles opponent for SummerSlam. Rumors had been flying around the internet about who it could be.
Samoa Joe, in a rehash of their TNA feuds of old? Daniel Bryan, a dream match we got a taste of after WrestleMania 34? Maybe Andrade ‘Cien’ Almas, who took Styles to the limit in an excellent TV match last week.
However, as Paige and the WWE Champion stood in the ring, an… interesting name strolled out from the back: James Ellsworth.
Ellsworth came out and, in a surprisingly great piece of continuity, explained that he deserves a title shot, as he defeated AJ Styles multiple times back in 2016. He then made a poor decision, by insulting his boss.
He mocked Paige for her accent, before saying she was “as pale as a ghost.” Paige took exception to these remarks, strutting up the ramp to where Ellsworth was standing and proceeded to give him two words: “You’re fired.” Quite harsh, if you ask me. If she’s that upset about being pale, just go lay in the sun for a bit. No need to have somebody fired over something so easily fixable.
Sidenote: In the midst of all of this, Samoa Joe revealed himself to be AJ’s challenger.
Backstage, Carmella shouted at Paige for firing the reason she wins all of her matches, lately. Later, in a brilliant piece of interconnecting storylines, the absence of Ellsworth allowed Becky Lynch to punch her ticket to SummerSlam against Carmella.
