Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer has awarded a WWE main roster bout a 5-star rating for the first time since 2011.
It was revealed in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that Cody Rhodes vs Seth Rollins at WWE Hell in a Cell 2022 received the elusive rating.
There was a lot of intrigue surrounding the bout in the day leading up to the event, following the revelation that Cody Rhodes had picked up an injury. During the event, WWE confirmed that Rhodes had torn his pectoral muscle completely from the bone, before Rhodes revealed a huge bruise across his chest and arm during his entrance.
Rhodes and Rollins went on to wrestle for 24 minutes, with Rollins working Rhodes’ chest on a number of occasions. The former AEW EVP ultimately picked up an emphatic victory to close the show.
This is the first WWE main roster bout to receive a 5-star rating since CM Punk vs John Cena at Money in the Bank 2011.
Several NXT matches have earned 5+ stars from Meltzer in the years since, most recently at NXT TakeOver 36 in August 2021 with WALTER (Gunther) vs Ilja Dragunov II.
The Young Bucks vs The Lucha Bros from last week’s episode of AEW Rampage also received a 5 star rating in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter.
