Despite having a career that has spanned more than twenty years in WWE, one incredibly popular WWE star has suffered the criticism of many.
A negative occasionally levelled at John Cena is that he has his “five moves of doom” and nothing else to add to his move set.
One wrestler has reflected on his time working with Cena and it changed his opinion on the thirteen-time WWE Champion.
Speaking to The Halftime Show, AJ Styles looked back on his feud with John Cena in 2016 and 2017, saying:
“I’ve had a lot of tough opponents throughout my career. I will say that a guy that surprised me with how good he was in the ring would be John Cena. John is not known for being a technical mastermind in the ring, but he’s pretty good.”
When AJ Styles arrived in WWE, he came with a reputation as one of the best technical wrestlers in the world, bringing with him global experience and his track record in Impact Wrestling.
Despite this acclaim and the plethora of opponents that Styles had faced, he cited Cena as a positive learning experience of his own, stating:
“I had some of my better matches against this guy. I didn’t realize what I was getting myself into, there’s a little bit of everything. I had no idea. That’s one of those things where I had a lot to learn.”
Going further, Styles pointed out that Cena, who was a product of the WWE developmental system, was more than just a guy who looked the part, explaining:
“His mind for how everything needs to work and transition-wise. He’s just good. He knows what he’s doing.”
Comparing himself to what he say when he was working with Cena, Styles saw how his own attitude changed, saying:
“It’s one of those things where you thought, ‘I’m the superior wrestler in the ring,’ but once you get in there with John Cena, you realize, ‘Well, okay, I didn’t know that. Let’s keep going.’ He’s pretty good.”
John Cena continues to make appearances in WWE whilst juggling a successful movie career.
As previously reported, he can be seen in The Independent, a political thriller that debuted on Peacock on November 2, 2022.
