Many things can go wrong prior to a Royal Rumble event. That isn’t even taking into account the threat of COVID-19 causing complications. As such, WWE has contingencies in place should stars not be able to perform.
Fightful Select (subscription required) is currently reporting that a pair of WWE stars were set as alternates for the Rumble match. Both Murphy and Cedric Alexander were at the venue for the event and were both listed as alternates internally.
The report also states that Montez Ford was also at the building. However, they note that Ford was not listed as an alternate.
None of the three men were used in the Royal Rumble match. Furthermore, Murphy has not been on television since the Mysterio family tested positive for COVID-19 in December. There were no details given about a potential return.
