Stone Cold Steve Austin Reveals WWE Match That Got Away WWE

Stone Cold Steve Austin has revealed the opponent that he would have faced in the match that got away and the reason it never came about.

Austin retired from in-ring competition in 2003 and would return at WrestleMania 38, robbing the Texas Rattlesnake of many opportunities to face a plethora of WWE talent.

In an interview with WESH 2 News, however, he revealed the lost opponent and the plan that didn’t come together, saying:

“That guy is Brock Lesnar. Way back in the day, I was scheduled to wrestle him in Atlanta at a television taping.

“The match wasn’t great as far as creative goes, so it never happened. That’s the match that got away.

“I have so much respect for Brock and watching him go through the evolution of becoming one of the best pros out there.

“To go into the MMA world and become a world champion. He’s had a heck of a journey and no one has had a career like his and his longevity has been supreme.

“Brock Lesnar would be my answer.”

Austin would walk away from WWE in 2002, later discussing the plans for him and Lesnar as a contributing factor.

In an 2019 interview, Austin discussed the obstacles and the decision that he made, saying:

“The night before, I was working in Columbus, Georgia, working with Ric Flair in a cage, so I was like a kid in a candy store working with the GOAT, so of course I didn’t show up.

“Because it wasn’t time for me to do the favours yet for Brock in an unadvertised match in a tournament-style TV match whereas hey, man, I love Brock Lesnar, I’d lose to him any day of the week, but build it up so we can all make money off of it and it’s going to mean something.”

Steve Austin would return to WWE after his walk out, though wouldn’t end up working with Lesnar.
