On WWE SmackDown, a fan favorite tag team seems to have broken up and possibly set up a big match at WrestleMania 39.
With tonight’s SmackDown seeing Drew McIntyre come to the ring to address the chase for the Intercontinental title, he was met by a betrayed Sheamus.
Outraged that his partner would target GUNTHER’s IC title after knowing Sheamus’ goal to capture the title, McIntyre kept it real.
Responding that Sheamus had his chance and lost, the duo did not work out their issues before the end of the segment.
Rather they were interrupted by LA Knight who was interrupted by New Day who were interrupted by Karrion Kross (with Scarlett) setting up a big match for next week.
On next week’s SmackDown (March 10) there will be a fatal 5-man match between Karrion Kross, Kofi Kingston, LA Knight, Sheamus and Drew McIntyre to determine who will get the next shot at GUNTHER and the IC title.
Interestingly, the match graphic did not specify when the next IC title shot would be occurring, still leaving time in the storyline for a potential twist ahead of WrestleMania 39.
One of the top rumored matches for WrestleMania 39 is a three-way battle between champ GUNTHER and Drew McIntyre and Sheamus.
Sheamus took to Twitter after the segment to share his thoughts, writing:
“Backstabbing Bastard after Backstabbing Bastard after Backstabbing Bastard after Backstabbing Bastard after Backstabbing Bastard after Backstabbing Bastard after Backstabbing Bastard after Backstabbing Bastard after Backstabbing Bastard after Backstabbing Bastard.”
Elsewhere on tonight’s SmackDown, Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns came face to face for the first time and during their interaction he made a glowing reference to a past achievement with the Young Bucks and they have since responded.
