A huge update has emerged on a top free agent with WWE interest, with this star officially departing his current promotion.
NJPW has announced that IWGP Tag Team Champion Jeff Cobb will be leaving the company at his own request.
Noting that the IWGP Tag Team Championship has been vacated ahead of Cobb’s final match for the promotion on April 19, NJPW shared the following statement:
New Japan Pro-Wrestling has come to terms with the departure of Jeff Cobb at his request.
With Cobb one half of the IWGP Tag team Champions, those titles have now been vacated.
Cobb’s final match in NJPW will take place in Korakuen Hall on April 19 against Hiroshi Tanahashi.
New Japan Pro-Wrestling profoundly apologises for the sudden nature of this news and joins fans in wishing Cobb the best in all his future endeavours.
Following previous reports about WWE interest and contract talks, it has been heavily speculated that Cobb will soon join the US-based company.
Fightful originally reported on March 13 that Jeff Cobb – who was referred to in the report as a free agent – is a star WWE had their eye on, with one source indicating that Cobb had appeared on WWE’s internal roster, which Fightful couldn’t confirm.
A later report from Dave Meltzer indicated that there have been contract talks between Cobb and WWE, with no confirmation of a deal.
Jeff Cobb only recently became a IWGP Tag Team Champion, winning the gold alongside Callum Newman from Tetsuya Naito and Hiromu Takahashi at the April 5 Sakura Genesis event.
We will continue to provide updates on Jeff Cobb’s status as they become available.
