WWE star Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s upcoming movie directed by Martin Scorsese has been picked up by a notable studio.
As previously reported, the crime movie will see The Rock in a major role, starring alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Emily Blunt.
The Hollywood Reporter now reports that the movie has been picked up by Disney’s 20th Century Studios.
The report notes that Johnson will also serve as a producer on the upcoming movie, sharing the role with Scorsese, DiCaprio, Blunt and scriptwriter Nick Bilton.
The untitled movie is set in the 1960s and 1970s and sees a mob boss attempting to take control of the Hawaiian islands.
Scripted by Nick Bilton, the movie is described as fact-based, with The Hollywood Reporter describing:
The untitled story tells of a formidable and charismatic mob boss who rises to build the islands’ most powerful criminal empire, waging a brutal war against mainland corporations and rival syndicates while fighting to preserve his ancestral land.
His ruthless quest for absolute power ignited the last great American mob saga, where the war for cultural survival takes place in the unlikeliest of places: paradise.
The Rock’s Seven Bucks Production previously signed a first-look deal with The Walt Disney Company, the owners of 20th Century Studios.
The first-look deal reports didn’t end there, with the Disney-owned 20th Television enjoying such a relationship with Seven Bucks Productions.
Under Seven Bucks Productions, co-founder Dany Garcia will also serve as an executive producer on the movie.
The Rock is also co-writing a book, along with Bilton, on the subject of the movie with the original idea for the project coming from Blunt.
As The Hollywood Reporter notes, Blunt and Johnson share a “ohana-like” bond, with the word being Hawaiian for “family”.
At the time of writing, the movie is yet to enter production and has no release date set.
With The Rock and John Cena currently allies in WWE, a potential name was recently revealed for their team.
