WWE To Re-Sign Former Champion?

WWE To Re-Sign Former Champion?

During a recent episode of the Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer commented on the possibility of Davey Boy Smith Jr. (formerly David Hart Smith in WWE) returning to the company at the end of the year.

Dave Meltzer noted that Davey Boy Smith Jr. has been discussed as a potential signing for the NXT UK brand, where he’d come in and be one of the top stars. However, Meltzer noted the deal can’t be done now as Smith is still under MLW contract:

“It could happen, but [Davey Boy Smith Jr.] is under contract until December with MLW so there won’t be any moves until then unless MLW releases him, which wouldn’t shock me if they would all things considered considering that both sides have been saying mean things about the other publicly. But yeah, I’ve heard Davey Boy Smith Jr is the big star in the UK brand, so I suppose that’s been talked about as well.”

Davey Boy Smith, who is the son of The British Bulldog, first signed a developmental contract with WWE in 2006. He went on to debut for OVW the following year. He was released from his deal in 2011.

The former WWE Tag Team Champion was actually set to return to WWE TV earlier this year as part of the Hall of Fame ceremony where he was set to induct his father. However, due to the Coronavirus pandemic, that was postponed.

Dave Meltzer actually reported over a year ago now that before the launch of Dynamite, AEW was in talks with Davey Boy Smith Jr. You can read more about that story by clicking here.

Speaking of former champions returning, it was reported last week that a former WWE star who was also released in 2011 has re-signed with the company and will be returning to WWE TV very soon. However, they have denied these reports on social media.
