WWE tried to get Becky Lynch booed at Hell in a Cell

According to Dave Meltzer on the latest edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, the finish of the Becky Lynch vs. Charlotte Flair match last night at Hell in a Cell was designed to generate a negative heel response towards Lynch.

Meltzer noted that having spoken with WWE sources: “The idea was to slowly get to where by the end Charlotte was the babyface and Becky screwed her out of the title. There was supposed to be subtle heel things in this match”.

Of course, that is not what happened. In reality, Lynch cleanly pinned Charlotte in the middle of the ring, without cheating, after reversing a spear attempt into a roll-up.

Meltzer’s broadcast partner Bryan Alvarez made his feelings on the matter abundantly clear. He complained: “Whoever put this match together should be fired”.

Post-match, Charlotte attempted to shake Becky’s hand and endorse her as the new SmackDown Women’s Champion. The peace offering was rejected by Lynch, who refused to let Charlotte take her spotlight again.

According to Meltzer, that too was supposed to signify that Lynch was the heel and Flair the sympathetic babyface. “When she blew off the handshake at the end that was supposed to be the heel move,” he noted.

WWE has shown several times in the weeks since Becky’s supposed heel turn at SummerSlam that they are tone deaf when it comes to fan perception of this storyline. Based on this revelation, that confused mentality shows no signs of abating.
