WWE Chief Content Officer Paul ‘Triple H’ Levesque has opened up about John Cena vs. Randy Orton at WWE Backlash.
The May 10, 2025, WWE Premium Live Event marked the last time that two veteran rivals would face each other during Cena’s retirement year.
John Cena would be victorious in the encounter, retaining the Undisputed WWE Championship in front of Orton’s hometown fans.
Speaking in the post-show press conference, Triple H reflected on the importance of the match and the chemistry between John Cena and Randy Orton, saying:
“For me, I was fortunate enough to be there as they were both coming in the door, and I was able to sit and watch them do that from 2001 forward all the way to today, I’ve seen a lot of that.
“I don’t know that I’ve ever seen one where I felt like, ‘Eh.’ Ever. It’s just that level of talent between the two of them. They have incredible chemistry. They know each other inside and out. When that happens, you get what you saw here tonight — 25 years later, magic.
“I just watched that match — however long they went, I don’t know, that was 40 minutes or something like that — I just watched that entire thing with this huge smile on my face. So proud of both of them, of the careers they’ve created, and the stars they’ve become. Just awesome.”
Triple H would speak about how the pair rose from the OVW development territory to the main roster, featuring in the headline sport of numerous WWE Premium Live Events, television and house shows over their time together.
John Cena signed a WWE developmental contract in 2001, with Randy Orton having entered a similar deal that year before.
It was recently reported that Cena’s WWE Championship reign is expected to run through summer.
