It’s a big day for eight of the most talented names on the British wrestling circuit but only one will emerge as the next challenger for the WWE UK Championship.
A tournament to find a number one contender for Pete Dunne’s title will culminate tonight at the Royal Albert Hall in London with the challenger set to face ‘The Bruiserweight’ for his belt tomorrow night at the same venue.
The tournament finals sadly won’t be streamed on the WWE Network live, and instead you’ll have to wait until next Monday (June 25) for the quarters, semis and final, and then Tuesday June 26 for Dunne’s bout against the winner.
First round matches took place at the Download Festival in the UK last week, apart from Jack Gallagher’s victory over Drew Gulak which happened at the NXT TV tapings on May 10.
The Download first round results were: Zack Gibson defeated Amir Jordan, Flash Morgan Webster pinned James Drake, Jordan Devlin beat Tyson T-Bone, Joe Coffey upended Tucker, Dave Mastiff pinned Kenny Williams, Travis Banks downed Ligero and Ashton Smith upset Joseph Conners.
This leaves a quarter-final line-up looking like this:
Zack Gibson vs Jack Gallagher
Flash Morgan Webster vs Jordan Devlin
Joe Coffey vs Dave Mastiff
Ashton Smith vs Travis Banks
Anyone who follows UK wrestling will know there are some mouthwatering matchups there.
Gallagher and ‘Liverpool’s Number 1’ Gibson came up together on the wrestling scene in the North West of England and have faced each other many times, most notably in FutureShock Wrestling. ‘The Modfather’ Webster from Wales vs Northern Irishman Devlin is an intriguing battle, while former ICW Champion Coffey versus former PCW Champion Mastiff will see two of the British Isles’ best heavyweights collide. Finally the PROGRESS Champion from New Zealand, Travis Banks, vs the prodigiously talented Ashton Smith could be a potential show stealer.
In other matches on tonight’s show, British Strong Style (Trent Seven, Tyler Bate and Pete Dunne) will clash with The Undisputed Era (Adam Cole, Kyle O’Reilly and Roderick Strong). Meanwhile Isla Dawn, Jinny, Toni Storm and Killer Kelly will do battle in a women’s fatal four way match.
Aside from the Dunne vs tournament winner match tomorrow, Adam Cole will defend his NXT North American Championship, Shayna Baszler will defend her NXT Women’s Championship against tonight’s fatal four-way winner, NXT Tag Team Champions Kyle O’Reilly and Roderick Strong will be in action, and EC3 and Velveteen Dream will battle NXT Champion Aleister Black and Ricochet in tag team action.
Shawn Michaels and Triple H are also scheduled to make appearances at the event, as is legendary UK wrestler Johnny Saint – The Man of 1,000 Holds- who has been named WWE UK General Manager.
