In the latest edition of the long-running joke that is Brock Lesnar’s WWE Universal Championship reign, reports are now surfacing that the so-called ‘Beast’ will not be defending his title at this year’s SummerSlam pay-per-view on August 19.
According to Mike Johnson of PWInsider Elite:
“I’m hearing that Brock isn’t working Summerslam. We may not see him again until later in the year, which is madness if you think about the belt.”
This comes hot off of the heels of reports that the Extreme Rules pay-per-view main event being changed due to a contract “snag” with Lesnar is 100% storyline. Whether that is the case or not, the fact that the company’s top prize might be missing for several months now must set off some alarm bells somewhere backstage. It also undeniably demolishes the rule that if a champion cannot defend their title within 30 days, they must relinquish it.
Of course, Lesnar missing SummerSlam is still just a rumor at this point. If it does come to fruition, however, a question must be raised about what it will mean for the WWE Universal Championship. Would Vince McMahon allow the longest World Title reign of the modern era be tainted in such a way after working so hard to rectify the last one?
