Real Reason For So Many New Nicknames On WWE TV WWE

The reason behind a number of WWE stars recently getting new nicknames has been revealed and it’s all down to the man at the top.

According to Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, it was indeed Vince McMahon who came up with the idea of nicknames for a number of the stars on the July 17 episode of WWE Raw.

Such nicknames have included ‘Dirty’ Dominik Mysterio and ‘Big’ Bronson Reed being listed on official match graphics, but also some that weren’t on the graphics and just said by the announcers, like the ‘Hellions from Hades’ Judgment Day, the ‘Spirited’ Sami Zayn, the ‘Scintillating’ Santos Escobar, the ‘Cheeky’ Chelsea Green, and the ‘Self-Aggrandizing’ Sonya Deville.

In the Observer, Meltzer wrote:

“It was confirmed to us that all the alliterative nicknames on the 7/17 Raw were a directive from Vince McMahon.

McMahon’s influence over WWE creative has been reported previously, with Triple H and Nick Khan seeking a “creative intervention” meeting with McMahon to ask him to “step back from making late, heavy changes”, but there’s no word that meeting has actually taken place.

Cody Rhodes has recently revealed what McMahon said to him upon his return to the WWE.

Eric Young has also spoken about leaving WWE as he “morally couldn’t” work for the company, with reports noting Young did not want to work with Vince McMahon and cited moral, creative and personal reasons for wanting to leave WWE.
