A WWE name has opened up on the challenge that Eric Bischoff laid out to Vince McMahon, inviting him to TV for a fight.
It had previously been reported that Bischoff had genuinely violent intentions towards Vince McMahon during the Monday Night Wars between WWF and WCW.
During a 1998 episode of WCW Monday Nitro, however, Bischoff would publicly call out Vince McMahon inviting him to a fight that would take place at Slamboree in that year.
At the May 17 pay-per-view, Bischoff would go ahead with his audacious offer although there was little chance of McMahon showing up, with the WCW executive being declared winner via count out.
WWE executive Bruce Prichard, who has long been close to McMahon, recently spoke about Bischoff and the incident on Something to Wrestle With, saying:
“[He was] jumping the shark. It was silly. He knew Vince wouldn’t come.
“It’s like me challenging P Diddy. He ain’t gonna come. If he did, he’d win, but he ain’t gonna come.”
Vince McMahon would have a response to the challenge, however, with Prichard adding:
“When’s their pay-per-view? He’s like, ‘I’ll meet him at a parking lot.’ That’s about it.”
He would add that Bischoff’s tactics were seen as a win for WWE, going on to suggest that WCW were acting out of desperation as it tried to claw back victory in the ratings war between the two companies.
Although no longer actively involved in a creative or authoritative capacity in the wrestling world, Bischoff has kept an eye on what’s happening and recently described the “silly nonsense” that he sees in AEW.
He’s also criticized AEW for making the “same mistakes” that were made by WCW, despite Tony Khan’s previous assertions that this wouldn’t happen.
With a packed weekend for pay-per-view wrestling, AEW have Double or Nothing on Sunday with NXT Battleground also taking place on the same evening.
Saturday, May 27 sees WWE return to Saudi Arabia for Night of Champions.
The card for WWE Night of Champions 2023 on Saturday, May 27 is as follows:
