The first night of WWE WrestleMania 41 has kicked off with a major title change as Jey Uso is the new World Heavyweight Champion.
At the start of February, Uso won the men’s Royal Rumble match by last eliminating John Cena, and quickly chose to challenge World Heavyweight Champion GUNTHER at WrestleMania.
As such, the Uso vs GUNTHER match had effectively been building for well over two months, including GUNTHER’s attack on Jey’s brother Jimmy Uso a couple of weeks ago that heated things up.
The Jey vs GUNTHER match kicked off the action at Mania 41 night one tonight, with Jey’s entrance being an appropriate open to the show – at least after WWE CCO Triple H had welcomed everyone.
The closing sequence of the match saw Jey Uso use some of GUNTHER’s own moves against him before going for three consecutive top-rope splashes.
He then locked GUNTHER in a sleeper hold – another of GUNTHER’s regular finishers – with GUNTHER tapping out almost instantly, thus crowning Jey Uso the new World Heavyweight Champion.
After the match, Jimmy Uso joined his twin brother Jey in the ring for an emotional embrace.
Michael Cole also mentioned that their father Rikishi is in attendance somewhere in the stadium tonight.
GUNTHER had been World Heavyweight Champion since SummerSlam 2024 on August 3, where he won the title from Damian Priest.
He had five retentions during his reign (excluding those that were untelevised), which came against Randy Orton, Sami Zayn, Priest, Priest & Finn Balor in a three-way, and also a previous one against Jey Uso.
