A WWE Hall of Famer has reflected on a WrestleMania match that remains iconic almost twenty-five years after it happened.

The match in question took place at WWE WrestleMania 17 in April 2001, and saw the second Tables, Ladders, and Chairs match for the then-WWF Tag Team Championship.

At the WWE event, The Dudley Boyz would lose the WWF Tag Team Championship to Edge & Christian in three-way match that also featured The Hardy Boyz.

During a recent interview with Denise Salcedo, D’Von Dudley reflected on the significance of the match, saying:

“Well, thirty years later… twenty-five or thirty years later, and they’re still talking about it.

“Apparently, we did something righ,t and we were clicking on all cylinders that night, and even with the other TLC matches, but that one was special.

“Not only did we have six guys going on in there doing stuff with tables, ladders and chairs, but we added three more elements to it which was Lita, Rhyno and Spike (Dudley).

“So, to have all of that and to be able to tell that type of story, and with no mess-ups, thank God, there was nothing in there that we can honestly say, ‘well, we should have did that/we should have did this instead.’ Everything just clicked.”

Looking at the legacy of the match, D’Von Dudley would address an issue that he perceives in the current era of TLC matches, stating:

“It blows my mind, the things that we did. We will always be considered the grandfathers of TLC because these guys nowadays do so many exciting but dangerous things.

“Back then, we did dangerous, too, but it was more storytelling than it was action, and I think that’s what made it so much easier because it’s Shakespeare, that’s what wrestling is. It’s Shakespeare.

“And we were able to do that and that match and all the other TLC matches, but each TLC match, I felt, I learned how to sell, how to stay down, how to wait for your opportunity to come back around, when it’s your turn to get up and do something. So, each one, I felt I get better and better at.”

D’Von would reveal that he felt he always had to be doing something in such matches for the live crowd, but re-evaluated that belief after watching TLC matches before WrestleMania 17.
