Young Bucks & Tony Khan Comment On Cody’s Unprotected Chair Shot At AEW Fyter Fest

Last night at AEW Fyter Fest, Cody and Darby Allin went to a 20-minute time limit draw.

The match was fantastic, but what really had fans talking was the post-match assault on Cody from fellow former WWE superstar Shawn Spears (Tye Dillinger).

While it is great to see AEW positioning Shawn Spears in a way that WWE seemed to be reluctant to do, the new promotion has come under some fire for allowing Cody to take an unprotected chair shot to the head.

In a time where concussion-related issues have become more apparent, the site of the back of Cody’s head gushing with blood left some fans feeling uneasy.

After the event, AEW boss Tony Khan spoke to the media about the angle. While he confirmed that Cody does not have a concussion, he labelled the incident as “regrettable”:

“[We] called the doctor immediately. It’s really regrettable what happened. I don’t know if this is the time to go into detail, but we had taken precautions in that specific situation, and a doctor was available. Cody does not have a concussion, only staples, and we’re very grateful for that.”

“It was unfortunate what happened. All I’m going to say right now is, you can build the safest airplane in the world, but if there’s a pilot error, there’s a pilot error. It was not good.”

Matt and Nick Jackson of the Young Bucks said that the chair was “gimmicked”, but did highlight that the spot obviously didn’t go as planned:

“You think it was unprotected. That was all Cody’s idea. I do know that they ‘gimmicked’ the chair and it clearly didn’t work because he was bloody.”
