This is Andrade’s first championship since being promoted to the main roster in 2018. Rey Mysterio won the title from AJ Styles on the night after Survivor Series. He recently defended it against Seth Rollins in the main event of Raw.
Andrade was reportedly one of a few men to be receiving a major push on Raw as we head towards 2020. He and Humberto Carrillo were both in line to move up the card in the near future. They had been feuding in recent weeks and they may now continue their rivalry over the United States Championship.
This is the first time the United States Championship has changed hands since AJ Styles defeated Kevin Owens at Madison Square Garden in 2017. WWE rarely changes titles at house shows but on occasion they do make exceptions.
