AEW President Tony Khan has explained why AEW is still running bigger venues despite lower attendance recently.
When All Elite Wrestling first started, the crowd for episodes of AEW Dynamite were consistently packed and felt like a party atmosphere with the company feeling like the hot commodity. However, attendance for AEW Dynamite shows have generally been clocking in around 3,000 fans, according to WrestleTix.
Despite these low attendance figures, the company often runs the local basketball or hockey arena in the market that usually seats 10,000 to 20,000 fans.
Most Wednesdays sees the crowds not looking well attended due to the crowd size compared to the arena size.
Speaking to GV Wire, AEW CEO Tony Khan was asked about the decision to run larger arenas despite the crowd size. He answered:
“It depends on the market and the time. A lot of times, those arenas have a lot of big advantages like email lists and marketing and they are a destination venue for shows.”
“It depends on the market and the timing. Certainly, bigger arenas do have a lot of advantages. They have a lot of sale contacts and really good marketing resources,”
When asked if not using the entire arena has any advantages for the company, Khan replied:
“It depends. They have a better chance of outreaching to certain customers than other venues.”
AEW is set to run the TD Garden in Boston for the March 13 episode of AEW Dynamite entitled, “AEW Big Business.” According to WrestleTix’s latest update, the show currently stands at 6,205 tickets sold.
