Oh, What A Night – NXT Takeover: New Orleans Review, April 7, 2018

Shayna Baszler beats Ember Moon to win the NXT Women’s Championship

Unfortunately for Baszler and Moon, it was always going to be tough to follow a match of such brilliance, but credit where credit is due, they put on another top quality match.

Also credit to the crowd, who were incredible all evening. It would have been easy for them to be tired out after the ladder match, but they gave their all to give each match the best atmosphere possible.

This match was always going to go down to whether Ember Moon could overcome the sheer power of Baszler, but pretty early on, it felt like the match was only going in one direction, and so it proved.

There were so great spots in the match, particularly Moon’s ‘Eclipse’ to the outside. It’s a very aesthetically pleasing move at the best of times, so the added height and force she managed to pack into it was truly stunning to see.

The match concluded in the same vein as their last encounter, although this time Moon wasn’t able to escape.

Baszler brilliantly countered a second ‘Eclipse’ into a ‘Kirifuda Clutch’ which has a different name to Samoa Joe’s ‘Coquina Clutch’ in ways that I am yet to understand.

Anyway, despite several attempts to escape, Moon eventually passed out and the match ended, rather anti-climatically it has to be said. The end seemed to come as a bit of a shock to the crowd and the silence that followed the bell was a bit awkward.

But that doesn’t really matter. If rumors are to be believed, Moon is on her way up to the main roster, so good luck to her.

The result also allows for a ‘mean heel vs struggling babyface’ feud to start. One would imagine that Kairi Sane is the most obvious choice given her history with Baszler. And if that’s the case, we’re in for another treat.
