Undisputed WWE Champion CM Punk has addressed the real reason for his absence following WrestleMania 42, following his recent return to the ring.
In the main event of WrestleMania 42 Sunday on April 19, CM Punk dropped the World Heavyweight Championship to Roman Reigns.
Punk didn’t wrestle for over two months after this, returning on the July 6 Raw episode to win the Undisputed WWE Championship from Sami Zayn.
Speaking with ESPN New York, CM Punk opened up about his time off, noting that he needed a reset.
He explained:
“In my business, in this company, for me to be able to say that I had time off and it wasn’t due to injury or a surgery is remarkable. It was the first time in my career where I had time off without having to go get a surgery or be injured. I just hung out with my wife.
“I had… I’m not going to say a rough year, suffering is relative, I was heavyweight champion over on Raw for quite some time. During that entire time I was champion, I had at least three or four people who were very close to me pass away, and each time, I was at work the next day.
“I didn’t talk about it publicly. I showed up, partially because it helped me, being here amongst my road family and being able to connect with the fans on that level helped me get through it, but there was still some stuff I needed to process.
“My time away was just to kind of reset. And one day away from my wife was one too many. I’ve been with her like every single day, and now that I’m back, I’m champ and I’m on the road. I’m as full-time as full-time gets.”

There were a lot of rumors swirling during CM Punk’s WWE absence, including one that issues between him and WWE were the reason for his hiatus.
Dave Meltzer reported in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter in late-June that saying there is no issues at all between WWE and Punk “wouldn’t be correct”, however, they are “not as bad as some have made it out to be.”
CM Punk hit the ground running, winning WWE’s top title during his return match, and preparing to defend the gold at SummerSlam.
With CM Punk emphasising that he’s “as full-time as full-time gets”, it will be interesting to see what new storylines Punk has on the SmackDown brand.
