A Hall of Famer and former WWE Champion has returned to TV and looks to have formed a new partnership with a current star.
In a backstage segment on last night’s January 16 NXT, JBL popped up and had some words for Josh Briggs.
Briggs is now embarking on a singles career after he, Brooks Jensen and Fallon Henley all agreed to go their separate ways after a couple of years teaming together.
This was kickstarted a few weeks ago when JBL chose Briggs as a qualifier for the Iron Survivor Challenge, which was won by Trick Williams at Deadline and earned him an NXT Championship match tonight.
Since then, Briggs has been feuding with Meta-Four on a quest to win the Heritage Cup trophy from Noam Dar.
Briggs did lose a match for the trophy against Dar recently due to Meta-Four cheating, but did bounce back with a win over Oro Mensah last week.
Last night, Briggs asked JBL if he had any feedback from the Mensah match, to which JBL replied:
JBL: “I watched your match, it was a great victory, but what you’re looking for… it’s not there. Do you know why I picked you to be in the qualifier?”
Briggs: “Yeah, because I’m a good big man, right?”
JBL: “You are that, but I want you to discover who you are. You see, you have all the talent in the world, you’re incredible, you’ve shown that since you’ve gotten to NXT, but who is Josh Briggs?
“I put up the beer, threw away the playing cards, and I showed the world that JBL was a Wrestling God. That was my journey. Yours is different. I want you to show NXT, WWE, who you are.”

It remains to be seen if the Briggs/JBL relationship will be a permanent one with JBL as Briggs’ manager, but right now, it seems more like he’s just giving him some advice every so often.
