A WWE star has commented on NXT UK closing down.
In August, WWE announced that the NXT UK brand was going on hiatus ahead of the eventual launch of NXT Europe in 2023.
The NXT UK brand featured a number of current main roster stars with current Intercontinental Champion Gunther being among their greatest champions.
Gunther holds the record with a 870 day reign as NXT UK Champion from 2019 to 2021.
Appearing on Steve Fall’s Ten Count, the leader of Imperium was asked if he was sad when his former brand closed down.
Gunther answered:
“I got to be honest. No, I wasn’t really sad. I think it was a natural progression. I think it was great that it lasted through the pandemic. It was very difficult to do.”
“Everybody put the work in to make it as good as possible, but for me, even when I started in NXT UK, I was always thinking it would be Europe-wide because at some point, a lot of the key players in NXT were not from the UK.”
The SmackDown star concluded by noting he is very excited for NXT Europe, saying:
“They were European. We had a bunch of Europeans that did really well. So I always wanted that progression to happen. I’m really excited for it.”
Gunther left the NXT UK brand in 2021 before transitioning over to NXT. He was eventually called up to SmackDown following WrestleMania 38 in April 2022.
Gunther last competed in a successful defense of the Intercontinental Championship against Rey Mysterio on the November 4 edition of WWE SmackDown.
