A big change has been made to the IWGP US Championship #1 Contender’s Tournament lineup ahead of NJPW Collision in Philadelphia.
At Sunday’s April 16 show, the tournament to determine the next challenger for Kenny Omega’s gold will get underway.
A notable alteration has been made to proceedings, with Juice Robinson now out of the tournament, and former NJPW STRONG Openweight Champion Fred Rosser (fka Darren Young) replacing him.
NJPW has announced that Robinson has been suspended by the company following his actions at Saturday’s Capital Collision event.
The company shared the following statement on the change:
Thank you for supporting New Japan Pro-Wrestling.
On April 15 at Capital Collision, a scheduled match between Juice Robinson and Fred Rosser ended in a no contest when Robinson attacked Rosser before the bell, and also assaulted an official.
New Japan Pro-Wrestling holds the safety of its competitors and staff at the highest priority, and after careful consideration, has determined that Juice Robinson be suspended effective immediately and until further notice.
As a result, Robinson will not compete at Collision in Philadelphia. NJPW apologises for the sudden card change and any inconvenience and disappointment caused.
The following changes have been made to the Collision in Philadelphia card:
5th Match
Fred Rosser & Rocky Romero vs SANADA & Yoshinobu Kanemaru ->
Homicide & Rocky Romero vs SANADA & Yoshinobu Kanemaru
8th Match
IWGP US Championship Number One Contender’s Tournament: Juice Robinson vs Lance Archer-> Fred Rosser vs Lance Archer
This means that the IWGP US Championship #1 Contender’s Tournament is now:
Semifinals:
– Fred Rosser vs Lance Archer: Collision in Philadelphia (April 16)
– Will Ospreay vs Hiroshi Tanahashi: Resurgence (May 21)
Finals:
– Winner of match #1 vs winner of match #2: Dominion (June 4)
The IWGP US Championship is currently held by AEW’s Kenny Omega, who defeated Will Ospreay for the gold at January’s Wrestle Kingdom 17 event.
While it hasn’t yet been confirmed, it has been heavily speculated that Omega’s title defence against the tournament winner will take place at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door 2023 on June 25.
