Monday’s (March 21) New Japan Cup quarterfinal match between Will Ospreay and Zack Sabre Jr was awarded a five star rating in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.
The match ended with Sabre Jr earning a controversial submission victory to advance to the semifinals, with Will Ospreay claiming that he didn’t tap.
The defeat marked Ospreay’s first singles loss since unsuccessfully challenging for Kazuchika Okada’s IWGP World Heavyweight Championship at Wrestle Kingdom 16.
Dave Meltzer was a huge fan of the two rivals’ latest clash, believing that the contest showcased ‘Sabre at his best’.
Just four men remain in the New Japan Cup tournament, Sabre, Shingo Takagi, Tetsuya Naito and Kazuchika Okada.
Sabre will face Takagi, and Naito will battle Okada on Saturday to determine the two stars set to meet in Sunday’s tournament final.
