A new report has revealed how much Lyon Metropolis paid for WWE Backlash on May 4, 2024, and it’s a surprising figure.
In 2023, WWE Backlash was hosted by Puerto Rico with it being reported that WWE was paid $1.5 million dollars to bring the PLE to the region.
It was a different story in 2024, however, with Félix Gouty of POST Wrestling reporting that:
“Yes, economically, it was a smashing success for WWE. Even without having to go the public subsidies route, like for the initial Clash at the Castle in Cardiff or last year’s Backlash in Puerto Rico, as neither the Lyon Metropolis nor the region’s authorities (as confirmed to POST Wrestling) gave a cent to the company.”
Brandon Thurston of Wrestlenomics also provided insight into the arrangement, stating:
“Félix Gouty reports that while Backlash and Smackdown in Lyon set new gate records, neither Lyon Metropolis nor the region’s authorities paid a site fee for the event.”
Thurston also stated that, according to Mark Shapiro, “TKO got $16M for a combination of events in Australia, presumably including Elimination Chamber in Perth last February.”
Reference the 2022 WWE Clash at the Castle, Thurston stated that “a government press release implied about $2.8M was spent to bring Clash at the Castle [to] Cardiff in 2022.”
Per Gouty’s report, it was also noted that Paris was the “first choice” to host the PLE although WWE was prevented from finding a venue able to host them for four days (which would include set up and tear down) due to the Olympics which starts on July 26, 2024.
The 2024 edition of WWE Backlash was the “largest gate of any arena show in WWE history” with a reported attendance of 11,682.
